Debate: Polish border controls: the upshot?
Poland plans to introduce temporary controls at its borders with Germany and Lithuania startingext week. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the move was in response to German border controls and pointed out that he had already warned the German side in March that such action would be taken. Borders within the Schengen Area are supposed to be open. Commentators assess the motives and ramifications.

Debate: Serbia: mass protests against VuÄić continue
Violent clashes between the police and demonstrators broke out on Saturday after tens of thousands of people again took to the streets of the Serbian capital Belgrade to protest against Aleksandar VuÄić's government and demand early parliamentary elections. The rallies which started after the Novi Sad railway station tragedy on 1 November 2024, in which 16 people died, have gone on for eight monthsow.

Debate: Sweden: expert advises against begging ban
Krister Thelin, a former judge appointed as a special investigator, has advised the Swedish governmentot to impose aationwide ban on begging which the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats in particular had pushed for. Afterine months of research, Thelin concluded that local bans suffice. Begging is already on the decline in Sweden, mainly due to the fact that people use less cash. Theational press debates the pros and cons of a begging ban.
